Keys in hand

Things are moving right along.  After all the paperwork was signed, the property managers handed over the keys and we took a moment to celebrate the occasion.  Bay poured the first beer and popped the cork on the first bottle of champagne in the empty, off-colored space that will soon be home to the Anthons’ new gastropub.

With the keys in hand, the countdown begins.  There’s loads to be done and a lot of magic needs to happen over the next couple of months so that a late-summer opening can become a reality.  But, man, is this getting exciting!  So many possibilities and so much fun to be had in the meantime…I, for one, am seriously looking forward to helping in any way I can with the menu!  Ahem.

Ready, set, go!

I’m so excited to start this blog to document the adventure my friends are embarking on – an adventure that’s been in the making for so long now.  I remember spending our evenings hanging out on their front porch where we’d talk about everything from last night’s football game to the advantages of using cloth diapers.  We’d quiz each other on recent trips to new Austin locales and recall longingly old hangouts no longer in business.  And, we’d be doing it with a fresh beer in-hand and good food on the table.  We’d test out new ways of cooking a 30-ounce steak (a few minutes on the stove top, then finished off in a piping hot oven) and we’d split up potato-slicing duty so everyone had a turn at cutting the perfect fry.  We’d try the latest and greatest beers brewed just around the corner at one of our favorite local breweries, and I’d learn the difference (for the umpteenth time) between a pale ale and a brown ale, deciding once again that I prefer a pilsner.

There was never any doubt in my mind that their love of trying new things and sharing them with friends would culminate in a way that brought this whole loving city to their front porch and around their kitchen table.  It was just a question of timing, and my dear friends and neighbors, I am happy to say that the north drag area will soon be home to their new baby, Hopfields.

I hope you’ll come along for the ride while we document their journey to establish a business they’ve dreamt about for years now.  I can’t promise it’ll be smooth sailing, but I do promise there will be a freshly poured pint of beer at the end.
